Preliminary Research Type : Basic

Preliminary Justification : Creating and raising awareness about burnout are important to improve quality of life among doctors. Their burnout level can affect the quality of healthcare service and organizational commitment. If the expectations and needs of doctors are fulfilled, their productivity at work tend to be raised. The professional burnout due to constant pressure also affect their health and vocational performance. Although Maslach burnout inventory is widely used in most studies relating burnout, the analyses of empirical literature stated the weaknesses of MBI such as restriction to human service professions, having independent measures for one concept, technical problems and back translations issues. As for the Copenhagen burnout inventory, it can be applied in different types of jobs so all kind of employees can answer and the reliability and validity is very satisfactory. Therefore the CBI is found to be more appropriate measure to assess burnout in health care professionals. Although there were many studies on burnout among health care professionals including basic health staff, nurses and doctors, there is limited study on quality of work life related with burnout among doctors in Myanmar. North Okkalapa General and Teaching Hospital is one of the major hospitals in Yangon. According to the hospital profile updated in 2018, it is 800 bedded hospital and yet 1300 beds are available. The hospital bed-doctor ratio was 6:1. There were total 37 wards including specialty departments. The patients’ admission rate is increasing year after year: 51169 total admission in 2016, admission rate was 56858 in 2017 and 60671 in 2018. The average number of admission per day was 166, average number of inpatient per day was 1059 and the average number of outpatient was 1159 in 2018. There are total of 149 assistant surgeons in 2020. These data revealed that doctors have to care for many patients every day. The results of this study may be overestimated because doctors these days are also overworked with current situation of COVID-19 cases. This study is to describe the status of quality of work life and magnitude of burnout among doctors working in North Okkalapa General and Teaching Hospital. It is also expected to contribute in intervention programs to reduce stress, negative vibes, burnout and programs enhancing quality of work life among health care professionals.
